Towards a secure biometric identity

Biometrics is coming to the rescue of the over-worked immigration officials. Imagine a scenario where all they need to do is connect to a centralised computer network, scan the passport for visa authenticity and other details, and the entire verification procedure is done.

Thanks to various pilot projects currently under way globally, biometrics – an automated process that verifies an individual’s identity based on physical characteristics like facial recognition, fingerprints and iris patterns – is helping immigration officials ensure secure movement of people.

The increasing threat of identity fraud necessitates the strengthening of security features in passports.
