The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust has extended the use of its EuroKing Miracle maternity solution to support its four hospitals – The Royal Oldham Hospital, Rochdale Infirmary, North Manchester General Hospital and Fairfield General Hospital in Bury. The new enterprise-wide solution will enable the Trust to generate more detailed reports and provide greater consistency across its sites. As a result, the Trust will be able to deliver improved care to the 10,000 mothers that pass through its wards every year – making this installation one of the largest of its type the UK.
The decision to implement the EuroKing Miracle solution, which uses the InterSystems Cachй post-relational database, was driven by Pennine’s need to increase standardisation and minimise disruption as the four hospitals were merged into one Trust in 2002. Prior to the merger, three of the sites had developed their own bespoke maternity implementations based on the EuroKing Miracle solution. North Manchester, meanwhile, had no obstetric solution in place at all.
Pennine chose to extend its relationship with EuroKing Miracle and InterSystems. A key criterion for selection was Pennine’s desire to enable its staff to provide complete continuity of care from the mother’s first visit to the antenatal clinic, to delivery of the baby, and through to eventual discharge. Mothers should not be expected to answer the same questions at each stage of their journey, and staff can concentrate on providing improved care if they do not have to re-enter data at each stage. The EuroKing solution is intuitive, easy-to-use and designed to match the specialist working practises of the midwifery community, thus ensuring easy adoption by users across the unit.
The enterprise-wide implementation at Pennine delivers additional benefits. The data is stored on a single server and is accessible to all authorised users across the four hospital sites. If a mother has previously had children in different hospitals across the Trust, or has visited a number of different antenatal clinics during a single pregnancy, care staff will have access to all appropriate records in real time.
Upgrading to the new enterprise-wide EuroKing Miracle system, three of the Pennine hospitals undertook the task of consolidating their data onto a single system. Working together, the Trust and EuroKing Miracle staff have successfully managed the conversion, resulting in one consistent care records database. By implementing the system into the North Manchester Maternity Unit too, the picture is complete.
From the IT team’s perspective, having a true web-based solution hosted on a centralised server located at North Manchester Hospital means that the solution can be deployed to all necessary users with a reduced IT support workload. Client PCs now require only standard desktop assistance, with no complex software to support.
EuroKing Miracle is able to offer its customers the unique ability to use laptops to collect maternity data in the community, and then upload it to the main system later on. The Pennine Trust is keen to implement the use of these devices and is working towards achieving this goal.
“We have been delighted with the EuroKing Miracle solution,” said John Lindars, Divisional Director for Women and Children’s Services at The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. “Now that we have rolled out this first phase of the implementation, we want to look at other ways we can use the system. For example, we are keen to expand it out to additional outposts within the community, such as community midwives, through the use of web-enabled handheld devices, for example. Such solutions will help us continue to provide truly effective care for mothers and babies.”
“Projects such as this demonstrate the true power that InterSystems Cachй brings to our solution,” said Jonathan Raife, Managing Director at EuroKing Miracle. “Cachй has enabled us to build Pennine’s application quickly and to provide the deep functionality required for this critically important user-community. The doctors, midwives and obstetricians using the solution now have access to a highly performant and reliable solution that allows them to focus on providing even better patient care.”
“Moving to a single system will allow the Trust to provide consistent maternity care across the whole community,” said Phil Birchall, Director of Healthcare Business Development at InterSystems. “We are delighted to be associated with this project and extend our congratulations to both Pennine and EuroKing Miracle on this successful implementation.”
