Screensaver to attack Spammers

Lycos Europe has released a special screensaver for Windows and the Mac OS platforms that will attack spam web pages.

The screensaver “Make Love No Spam” will overload a variety of spam servers by flooding them with requests, which eventually cause them to stop responding – a process known as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The servers were selected from trusted source, Lycos said.

Though DDoS attacks are considered to be illegal, Lycos argues the attacks are not intended to deny the service completely, but making the spammer pay for bandwidth.

“The more users download and use the screen saver, the lower the performance of the sites sending out the spam, and the greater the costs for the operators,” said Lycos.
