SAND Technology Introduces Dynamic Nearline Architecture for Use with SAP NetWeaver BI

By | February 24, 2006

SAND Technology, Inc. (OTCBB: SNDTF.OB), an international provider of intelligent enterprise information management software, today announced the availability of SAND/DNA™ for use with SAP NetWeaver® Business Intelligence (SAP NetWeaver BI).

This new product is specifically designed to complement the data lifecycle management capabilities available to organizations as their data warehouse solutions grow in size. Users can now move infrequently used data into a nearline repository, where it is stored in a highly compressed format while remaining easily accessible. As a result, storage costs are reduced without compromising users´ ability to access granular historical data.

According to the Winter Corp., the number of installations of SAP NetWeaver BI worldwide increased from 7,000 to 10,000 between 2003 and 2005, and this growth shows no signs of slowing. Because the SAP NetWeaver BI-based environment is the analytical foundation of an SAP ® solution-based business, the ability to seamlessly integrate huge amounts of detail data into SAP NetWeaver BI to support rapid, comprehensive analysis, regardless of database size and sophistication, is of increasing importance to customers in all industries. For this reason, SAP has introduced support for a nearline architecture, which SAND/DNA exploits to the fullest.

“Through SAND´s data compression and schema management capabilities, an SAP NetWeaver BI archive based on SAND/DNA can be maintained and used more like an online database than an offline archive,” said Joshua Greenbaum, principal of Enterprise Applications Consulting (EAC). “The ability to use the same query tools, and to do so using online disk storage instead of mounting tapes, means the SAP NetWeaver BI user´s experience of SAND/DNA – and therefore the quality of the overall analysis – can be expected to be vastly superior to that offered by the standard archiving systems in use today.”

SAND/DNA´s advanced information management technology works seamlessly to manage extensive data stores, providing fast access to and highly efficient utilization of data in large data warehouses. Enterprise customers in industries such as healthcare, government, financial services, retail, and global transportation can cost-effectively retain massive amounts of compressed data in a nearline repository for extended periods, according to applicable business rules and regulatory requirements, and rapidly retrieve any information they need it, whenever they need it.

SAND/DNA provides four key features in support of SAP NetWeaver BI, offering customers the following:

Superior data compression: SAND/DNA typically delivers compression ratios of over 85 percent

Simplified online query access: SAND/DNA can support online queries from standard SAP NetWeaver BI-based reporting environments

Low-cost maintenance: SAND/DNA requires significantly fewer data administration resources than standard archiving systems

Linear scalability: Recent SAND benchmarks with Sun shows linear scalability with little or no loss in throughput.

“As implementations of SAP NetWeaver BI continue to grow significantly in size and scope, and the use of SAP applications increases at customer sites worldwide, we anticipate that the need to offload associated data while retaining easy access will continue to grow,” said Jerome Shattner, Executive Vice President, SAND Technology. “With the introduction of SAND/DNA Access for SAP for use with SAP NetWeaver BI, we are perfectly positioned to address this need by providing a low-cost, high-throughput nearline solution that offers greater flexibility and ease of use for the data that previously had to be archived offline.”

SAND Dynamic Nearline Access for SAP Netweaver BI has been certified by SAP for its smooth integration as an ABAP add-on with the SAP NetWeaver Application Server. This software has been awarded the endorsement “Powered by SAP NetWeaver”.
