iPass Inc. (NASDAQ: IPAS) today announced a roaming agreement with one of Europe´s leading wireless network operators, The Cloud, leading to the imminent activation of more than 6,000 new WiFi hotspots and wireless hotzones onto the iPass Global Broadband Roaming network. The partnership will make The Cloud´s network available to more than 800,000 active quarterly worldwide iPass users at key business venues in the UK, Germany and Sweden, and urban hotzones in the UK´s largest city centres.
The Cloud´s wireless network covers key business venues in Europe including all the major UK airports as well as hotel chains, conference centres, train stations, coffee bars and urban zones such as the Canary Wharf business district in London. Nine UK city centre hotzones, including Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh, will also go live in the coming months, plus The Cloud´s City of London “Square Mile Network” in late 2006.
“The business community has recognised the need to embrace mobile and wireless technologies as a means to increasing productivity and efficiency. The Cloud runs a neutral network that maximises both the quality and choice available to customers, rather than subjecting them to a multiplicity of proprietary networks that are expensive, overlapping and inconvenient,” said George Polk, CEO, The Cloud. “iPass is also widely recognized for its operator-agnostic approach and this has resulted in them building a significant customer base, and the most admired enterprise-grade aggregated network available. We are delighted to be working with iPass and are looking forward to welcoming their customers onto our network.”
iPass expects to activate The Cloud´s network by the middle of April, At this time, the iPass network is expected to include over 50,000 wireless hotspots and venues around the world. As part of the integration process, Wi-Fi hotspots and urban hotzones in The Cloud´s network have been going through the rigorous iPass Enterprise Ready certification program. The program works to ensure interoperability with common policy and security tools that business customers use.
“Wireless technologies are changing the way that people work because they are giving users the choice to work where they want, when they want, without compromising their productivity,” said Anurag Lal, Senior Vice President of Strategic Services and Business Development, iPass. “But it´s not only about choice, it´s about convenience. By partnering with The Cloud, we are able to offer thousands of new venues to our enterprise customers, many in some of the most intensive business environments such as hotels, conference centres or urban zones such as Canary Wharf and The City of London. The addition of the Cloud´s coverage is expected to strengthen iPass´ reach in Germany and Sweden. We are convinced this will be of significant benefit to iPass users and are looking forward to the impact that this will have.”
